Meet James Burnham-King, our General Manager and Sommelier Extraordinaire

James Burnham-King, the esteemed General Manager and Sommelier at the luxurious Crags Country Lodge, is a paragon of the hospitality industry. His journey into the world of beverages and wine began in the warmth of home kitchens and gatherings with friends and family, where he cultivated a deep-seated curiosity about the creation and connection of things. This curiosity blossomed into a passion for the intricate dance of food, culture, and history that wine represents, a passion that was ignited by the fervour of Master Sommelier candidates in a documentary that James chanced upon.

James's career trajectory was not a straight shot aimed at the roles of Sommelier or General Manager. Instead, it was a path paved by openness to opportunities that allowed him to share his zeal and contribute meaningfully to the industry and those within his sphere of influence. At the heart of his role at Crags Country Lodge lies the fundamental goal of guest satisfaction, a goal he achieves by fostering a team that is not only skilled and well-trained but also poised for growth and development.

The wines that have left an indelible mark on James's palate are those intertwined with personal moments and shared with loved ones, often in settings as unique as the wines themselves. A recent highlight was the Highland Road Semillon 2017, savoured alongside his wife Alice, and close friends on the Keurboom river, complemented by freshly harvested mussels. This experience was elevated by the Boekenhoudskloof Noble Late Harvest 2015, a wine that stands out as “nothing short of exceptional”.

In curating the wine selection at Crags, James enjoys spotlighting the smaller, lesser-known local producers that bring a distinct style and story to the lodge's wine list. This approach not only enriches the guest experience with exclusive and intriguing flavours but also supports the local South African and Crag’s wine industry, reflecting James's commitment to adding value to his community.

James Burnham-King's professional profile is a tapestry of dedication, passion, and a perpetual quest for excellence. His influence at Crags Country Lodge is a testament to his belief in the power of shared experiences and the magic that a bottle of wine can hold in turning simple moments into cherished memories. Whether through the selection of a rare vintage or the mentoring of his team, James ensures that every guest's stay at the lodge is imbued with the same sense of wonder and discovery that first drew him to the world of wine.

Some more from James on wine in the Crags…

In the verdant embrace of the Crags, one can find a treasure trove of delightful beverages that are as unique and inviting as the landscape itself. Among James’ favourites is the locally produced Highland Road Semillon, a wine that captures the essence of the region with its crisp and refreshing notes, perfect for enjoying alongside the serene waters of the Keurboom river. Another cherished selection is the Boekenhoudskloof Noble Late Harvest, a wine that is both sumptuous and sophisticated, offering a taste experience that is truly exceptional.

Not to be overlooked, James’ wife Alice, the Head Chef at Crags Country Lodge has sourced the best in local artisanal offerings; from Nature’s Way Farm Stall, who provide a rustic charm with their home-baked goods and homemade cheeses, paired exquisitely with their selection of local wines and fresh produce. “Each sip and bite at this family destination is a reminder of the simple pleasures that life in the Crags affords”.

For those seeking a bubbly delight, the effervescent creations from Newstead Wine Estate are a must-try, with their estate wines and bubblies bringing a touch of celebration to any occasion. The Peppermill Cafe, a gem among the Crags' culinary offerings, presents a contemporary twist on classic beverages, where each drink is crafted with care and served with a side of warm hospitality. These beverages, each with their own story and character, are not just drinks; they are an invitation to indulge in the sensory pleasures of the Crags, to create moments of connection and joy, and to savour the flavours that make this region so special.

Whether it's a quiet afternoon respite or a lively gathering with friends, the beverages of the Crags offer something for every palate and every occasion.  At Crag’s Country Lodge, this exemplary husband and wife duo seek to continually innovate on their guest experience to present food and wine that will celebrate the uniqueness of the region, just a short drive from Plettenberg Bay.

Guest feedback provides a true testament to the wonderful experience one can expect under the leadership of James...
